PrimeMap is a travel and discovery app for iPhone, Android, and Apple Watch that lets you find over 4 million historic places worldwide on an interactive map — castles, ruins, lost places, museums, churches, monuments, viewpoints, and geocaches. Plus over 14 million parking spots and 3 million restaurants & cafés. Every location has detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Wikidata, in 13 languages.
Yes, PrimeMap is completely free. You can download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and use all features without a subscription. There's discreet advertising that you can optionally remove via a one-time in-app purchase.
PrimeMap shows you 9 main categories: castles & palaces, ruins, historic sites, museums, churches, monuments, lost places, viewpoints, and geocaches. You'll also find nearby parking and can add your own places with photo and description, which become visible to the community after moderation.
PrimeMap requires an internet connection to load POI data and Wikipedia content. Once loaded, content remains available for the session — so you can easily walk through an area that you previously explored with an active internet connection. Full offline functionality is planned for a future update.
Lost Places are abandoned locations with a special atmosphere — old factories, vacant hospitals, abandoned train stations, deserted military facilities, or decaying villas. They hold a unique fascination because they tell stories of decay, forgetting, and the passage of time. PrimeMap shows you Lost Places worldwide on the map — please always respect property and safety when visiting.
In AR mode (Augmented Reality), simply point your iPhone's camera at your surroundings. PrimeMap then shows the names, distances, and directions of all nearby sights directly in the camera view. This helps you find places you'd otherwise miss — perfect for city tours or hikes.
PrimeMap runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android smartphones. On Apple Watch, you have a standalone app with map, list, and detail view — you can discover sights right on your wrist without pulling out your iPhone. Minimum requirements: iOS 17, watchOS 10, or Android 10.
Google Maps is primarily a navigation app. PrimeMap is a discovery app focused on historic and unusual places: castle ruins, lost places, forgotten monuments, geocaches. You get detailed background information for every place from Wikipedia and Wikidata — automatically in your language. Plus: AR mode, Apple Watch app, and a unique modern UI with cluster pins and a route planner.
