Castles in Catalonia

Updated November 2026

Catalonia was a border region for centuries, first between Christian and Moorish Spain, later between Spain and France. That is why it has so many castles: watchtowers on hilltops, fortified villages and huge fortresses.

The castle of Cardona stands above a salt mountain, Sant Ferran in Figueres is one of the largest fortresses in Europe, and the medieval village of Peratallada is still surrounded by its moat cut into the rock.

PrimeMap lists 1,424 castles in Catalonia. Here are some of the best known.
